The DHI Hair Transplant Technique
Modern society has created modern needs. Today the appearance of a person plays a big role in all aspects of life. Men and women spend millions of pounds each year to become more beautiful on the outside, and one of the most serious problems, faced mainly by men, is hair loss and baldness, even at a very young age. Science has been dealing with this problem for many years now, and the most modern and also the only effective method of treatment appears to be hair implantation.
In the past, we have seen the development and use by various specialised clinics of hair implantation methods on the human head. Until recently, most of these were particularly painful, time-consuming, leaving injuries and scars without any guarantee of long-term results.
How does the DHI Technique work?
Now, only DHI clinics use the revolutionary DHI hair transplant technique, i.e. Direct Hair Implantation, which is very simple to implement, causing no pain, stitches or scars, while it also has the major advantage that the hair continues to grow naturally forever. This method has nothing to do with previous strip methods, which have been applied up to now, and were quite painful.
In this new technique, the hair follicles are extracted one by one from the donor area and then implanted directly or with a slight delay in the receiving area. Thus, the survival and growth of the hair follicle is increased, as the time it spends outside the patient’s skin is significantly reduced.
For the implementation of this new method tools are used that are considerably smaller in diameter (less than 1mm) than those previously utilised. So, no socket holes are induced, the injury to the skin is minimised, and no scars are created.
Additionally, since the hair follicles are transferred directly from the donor to the recipient area without any treatment, the risk of contamination is reduced to a minimum, with the healing time dramatically shortened, and the patient, after a single visit, can return to work normally, taking of course certain necessary but simple precautions which will be explained post procedure.
Advantages of DHI Hair Transplant Technique
This rapid transplantation of hair follicles maintains and utilises the most of their viability, in comparison to other methods meaning that the time elapsed would create a deprivation of oxygen and blood supply to the hair, with sometimes devastating consequences to it.
Furthermore, with the DHI technique, along with the hair follicle from the donor area, the sebaceous glands and the sheath of the follicle are also removed, something that ensures normal growth of the hair after the completion of the procedure. So the hair is and looks natural, not in any way appearing “fake” or betraying the implantation procedure.
Another great advantage of the Direct Hair Implantation technique is that it is completed faster and with much greater comfort for the patient, as it is performed with him seated on a surgical chair and not lying prone on the surgical bed, as was done with previous methods. The patient, after a short period of time, may treat the new hair as natural, regaining any lost confidence.
Who is a Good Candidate for DHI in Birmingham?
DHI is often well suited to patients who require precise hairline refinement, such as those in the early stages of hair loss or those looking to restore a receding frontal hairline with careful control over angle and direction. If you are somewhere between Stages 3 to 5 on the Hamilton-Norwood Scale, then you are likely to be a suitable candidate.
It may also be appropriate for patients who need high-density work in targeted zones, for example in the frontal third of the scalp or to reinforce existing hair where thinning has begun. From our experience, DHI tends to yield better graft survival than FUE, making it the perfect option for those with limited donor area.
That being said, DHI is not always the most efficient choice for patients who require large numbers of grafts across wider balding areas, such as advanced crown or full top-of-scalp restoration (Norwood 6+). In these cases, standard FUE implantation techniques may allow grafts to be placed more efficiently while still achieving natural-looking results.
The DHI Hair Transplant Process: Your Treatment Journey in Birmingham
Your DHI hair transplant journey begins with a detailed consultation with one of our expert patient advisors. Your initial consultation can be conducted online or in-person. Here, you will be provided with a personalised treatment plan and full breakdown of cost.
During this stage, your surgeon assesses your pattern of hair loss, donor hair quality, scalp condition, and long-term expectations. Hairline design and density planning are discussed in detail, and an approximate graft estimate is created to ensure the result looks natural now and remains appropriate as hair loss progresses. You may also be recommended medication to prevent further pattern hair loss.
The Day of Your Procedure
On the day of the procedure, hair follicles are extracted individually from the donor area under local anaesthetic. You will be fully conscious but not able to feel any pain while surgery is taking place.
Extraction focuses on preserving the surrounding tissue while selecting healthy follicles that are suitable for transplantation. The donor area is managed carefully to maintain an even appearance once healing is complete. Extraction is performed by the surgeon.
After extraction, grafts are prepared and kept in controlled conditions to maintain viability. Minimising the time follicles spend outside the body is an important part of supporting healthy growth, and each graft is handled by trained technicians to reduce the risk of damage during transfer.
Implantation is then performed using a specialised implanter pen, which allows the surgeon to place each follicle directly into the scalp in a single step. The benefit of DHI over FUE is that the surgeon is also a key part of the implantation process
Once implantation is complete, you will receive immediate aftercare guidance before leaving the clinic. This includes instructions on washing, sleeping position, activity levels, and medication where appropriate. We also have a handy aftercare app to help you out.
After your procedure, you will also have follow-up consultations at 2 weeks, 3, 6, and 12 months. This is designed to monitor healing and address any concerns during the early recovery period, ensuring you are supported throughout the initial stages of regrowth.
The Cost of a DHI Hair Transplant in Birmingham
There are several factors that influence the cost of a hair transplant at the Birmingham hair transplant clinic. The cost of DHI is primarily based on the number of grafts required and the overall complexity of the procedure. The larger the case, the more expensive the procedure is likely to be.
Most DHI hair transplants at the Birmingham clinic cost somewhere in the region of £6,000 to £8,000. For smaller areas like eyebrows, DHI usually starts from £5,000. Beard transplants can also be performed using DHI.
To make treatment more accessible, flexible finance plans are available for eligible patients, allowing the cost to be spread over manageable monthly instalments (up to 11 months). Full details of pricing structure and finance options can be discussed during your consultation, with no obligation to proceed unless you are comfortable with both the treatment plan and the investment involved.
